Alanya-Serik Toll Road: A Project of Promise and Controversy

Alanya-Serik Toll Road: A Project of Promise and Controversy

The newnounces Alanya-Serik toll road is one of the region’s most ambitious infrastructure projects.

Designed to slash travel time between Antalya and Alanya, the 122-kilometer highway promises economic growth, significantly reduced traveltime and a major boost to tourism.

However, the project has also sparked heated debate over its environmental impact, cost transparency, and the realism of its claimed benefits of reduced travel time.

The Promise: Faster Travel and Economic Growth

The Turkish government touts the Alanya-Serik toll road as a game-changer.

Officials claim the highway will reduce travel time from the current 2.5 hours to just 36 minutes, thanks to its modern design: 84 km of main highway, 38 km of connecting roads, 8 tunnels, and 19 viaducts, all built to accommodate speeds of up to 140 km/h.

Beyond time savings, the highway is positioned as a catalyst for regional development. By improving connectivity, it aims to enhance tourism, trade, and agriculture, particularly during peak seasons when traffic congestion is at its worst.

The Controversy: Environmental, Social, and Practical Concerns

Despite its potential benefits, the Alanya-Serik toll road faces significant opposition. Critics argue that the project’s route cuts through agricultural lands and divides neighborhoods, threatening local livelihoods and the environment.

But the most contentious issue is the realism of the 36-minute travel time claim.

Local residents, urban planners, and opposition politicians describe this as “utopian” pointing out that the highway bypasses the most congested area from Antalya Airport to Serik.

Many fear that the new route will not alleviate traffic but simply shift bottlenecks elsewhere. For example, the road between Antalya Airport and Serik is already notorious for congestion, and the new highway’s design may even increase travel time for some communities.

Local Reactions and Calls for Revision

Residents and local leaders are calling for the route to be revised to minimize harm to communities and farmland. They demand greater transparency in planning and cost, as well as more involvement from local stakeholders

The project’s success hinges on addressing these concerns. If the highway fails to integrate seamlessly with existing infrastructure or adequately mitigate its impact on local communities, its promised benefits—especially the dramatic reduction in travel time—may fall short.

Size of a Turkish squaremeter

This time, we will examine something that should seem quite simple: the size of a square meter. First, let's see what Wikipedia has to say on the subject: The square meter is a unit of area. It is defined as the area of a square whose sides measure exactly one meter. For those particularly interested in the subject, it is worth noting that one square meter equals 0.000001 square kilometers or 10,000 square centimeters. One question Wikipedia does not answer is the size of a Turkish square meter. Experience has taught us that one European square meter and one Turkish square meter are not equal. This is most obvious when we receive the floor plans for the units we promote. These are often quite exaggerated, and we often see 2-bedroom apartments listed as 150 square meters. However, visiting the apartment in question often reveals a different story. In other words, the 150-square-meter apartment turns out to be just 100 square meters. The main reasons for this are: - In Turkey, info...

Hottest topic of Alanya is about your guests

Recently the most discussed topics related to real estate in Alanya is without doubt the amendments to the law about short time rental of privately owned property. This has led to several other discussions that are also relevant for owners of private properties that do not rent out their property. Mainly two questions are being discussed.... - When are people that are staying in my property to be considered as commercial rentals? and - Must I register my guests with the local authorities and how is that done?   On social media platforms a fierce discussion has been going on. So far most information available has been 3rd party information such as "according to.... ", "we were told that... ", "local authorities said that... " and so on. In this blog post we will take a slightly different approach. We will take a look at the actual laws and form an opinion based on what the laws and regulations say. Before we start please note this carefully: - This inform...

Good advice when issuing a power of attorney

Good advice when issuing a power of attorney This is usually worth considering when buying or selling real estate or when you are in need of an accountant or a lawyer. Quite often, it can be useful and time-saving to issue a power of attorney to a third party, who can then act on your behalf. The process itself is simple and fast, and alone in and around Alanya there are almost ten different notary offices to choose from. These are the most important issues to remember when issuing a power of attorney: Only issue powers of attorney to persons that you trust and that you know who they are. Make sure that the power of attorney is specific and for your exact purpose only. When selling your property via power of attorney, the exact registration and location must be specified. When selling a car, the licence plate and registration must be specified and so on. If it serves a purpose, consider making a time-limited power of attorney. Use a professional translator whom you unde...
